Iona Parish Church

Iona Parish Church, a significant presence on the sacred Isle of Iona, was constructed in 1828 to serve the spiritual needs of the island community. This distinctive building was one of the “Parliamentary Churches” funded by an Act of Parliament to establish places of worship in the remote Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Replacing earlier structures destroyed during the Reformation, its erection marked the re-establishment of a formal place of worship on the island after centuries, reflecting a pivotal moment in Iona’s religious history.

Designed by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford, the church’s original plans were adapted for Iona, resulting in its oblong shape rather than the typical T-shaped parliamentary church. Over time, the interior has been thoughtfully re-oriented; a notable redesign in 1938/1939 repositioned the pulpit and communion table to face south. Today, the church is often associated with the Iona Heritage Centre, which is housed in the former manse nearby, offering visitors insights into the island’s rich past, including notable families and historical events through various exhibitions.

Iona Parish Church continues to be an active place of worship, offering services every Sunday. Service times vary seasonally, held at 12 noon in the summer months and 11 am during the winter. Additionally, short weekday services are observed on Tuesdays at 1 pm and daily during the peak summer season, providing ample opportunity for reflection and community engagement. This enduring church remains a vital part of Iona’s spiritual landscape.
