Pedlar’s Pool Ardura is a poignant historical landmark and natural feature located within the Ardura Community Woodland on the Isle of Mull. Situated alongside the River Lussa, about three-quarters of a mile from Strathcoil along the old Glen road, the site serves as a memorial to a selfless act of heroism from the late 19th century. It is a place of quiet reflection, set against the backdrop of an area of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) known for its ancient native oak, birch, and hazel woodlands.
The site is defined by the tragic story of John Jones, a pedlar (and resident of Bunessan) who died on April 1, 1891. During a virulent smallpox outbreak, Jones discovered a household in the Ross of Mull that had been completely shunned by the community out of fear of contagion. Despite the risks, he stayed to nurse the family through their illness; however, upon resuming his travels, he realized he had contracted the disease himself. He eventually succumbed to the illness by the side of the River Lussa, where he was buried on the spot to prevent further spread of the infection.
Today, the Pedlar’s Pool is marked by a stone cairn surmounted by an iron Celtic cross featuring fleur-de-lys emblems, inscribed with Jones’s name and age. The location is a popular stop for walkers exploring the Ardura trails, offering a blend of local folklore and exceptional natural beauty. The surrounding woodland is protected for its rare lichens, mosses, and vibrant understorey, making it a significant site for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers visiting the southern part of the island.
The Start: Pass through the gate at the end of the parking area to join the old Glen road track.
The Walk: Follow this flat, easy-to-walk gravel track for 0.75 miles.
Finding the Cross: The track runs parallel to the River Lussa. Keep an eye on the riverbank to your left; the stone cairn and iron Celtic cross stand in a small clearing right by the water’s edge at the “Pedlar’s Pool.”
