Pennygown Chapel is a captivating historical site on the Isle of Mull, comprising the atmospheric ruins of a medieval chapel and its associated graveyard. Located prominently on the north side of the A849 road, between Salen and Craignure, and close to the head of Loch Don, the chapel’s remains are often easily visible to those travelling through this part of the island. It stands as a silent testament to centuries of religious practice and community life on Mull.
Believed to date from the 13th century, Pennygown Chapel served as a parish church for a considerable period, undergoing various alterations throughout its active life. Today, the site consists primarily of substantial, roofless stone walls, providing a clear outline of its original structure. The surrounding graveyard is particularly noteworthy, containing numerous ancient gravestones, including several exceptionally well-preserved medieval carved grave-slabs. These intricate carvings often depict warriors or elaborate crosses, characteristic of the distinctive Iona school of carving.
As a Scheduled Monument, Pennygown Chapel is recognized for its national historical and archaeological importance. It offers invaluable insights into medieval religious life, local clan history, and artistic traditions on the island. The site is a poignant place for reflection, allowing visitors to connect with Mull’s deep past and appreciate the craftsmanship of its ancient inhabitants.
