Teacher’s Bothy Gometra offers a genuine, basic, and solitary accommodation experience on the car-free, off-grid island of Gometra. This traditional stone bothy provides a simpler, smaller escape ideal for solo travellers, couples, kayakers, and dedicated hill-walkers seeking extreme peace in the Hebrides. The bothy is entirely unmodernised, retaining a very basic standard of furnishing and decoration that reflects the low-impact lifestyle of the island community.
Teacher’s Bothy features a single bedroom with twin beds and is equipped with basic plumbing, including both an indoor toilet and an indoor bath. Heat and hot water for the bath and sink are derived solely from a solid fuel stove or woodburner, requiring guests to manage their own fire. Guests must supply their own sleeping bags and a camping gas cooker, although basic pots, cutlery, and crockery are provided. Essentials can be purchased from a small honesty shop located in the nearby settlement of Baileclaidh.
Access to Teacher’s Bothy Gometra is highly challenging and requires significant effort. Visitors must first take the ferry from Mull to the Isle of Ulva, and then follow a rough, scenic track that amounts to a demanding seven to eight-mile walk across Ulva and the causeway to Gometra. This journey makes the bothy entirely unsuitable for car-based visitors or those reliant on public transport. Booking is essential and is managed exclusively via online rental platforms, particularly Airbnb.
