The Tobermory Clock Tower is an iconic landmark located prominently on Main Street, near the Fisherman’s Pier, in the vibrant town of Tobermory, the capital of Mull. Built in 1905, this distinctive monument was erected in memory of Henrietta Amelia Bird, who tragically died of typhoid in Tobermory in 1880. Her sister, the noted traveller and writer Isabella Lucy Bird (later Isabella Bishop), funded its construction as a lasting tribute. Its design is said to be a copy of a clock tower in Houghton, Cambridge, a place connected to Miss Bird’s friend, Charles Whymper, who designed it. The tower’s striking presence, with its tapered square granite base and lead-faced clock topped by a pyramidal slated roof, contributes significantly to the picturesque and colourful character of Tobermory’s waterfront.
More than just a time-telling device, the Clock Tower has become a beloved symbol of Tobermory itself. It stands as a focal point in the town, often featured in photographs and acting as a natural gathering spot for visitors and locals alike. Its historical origins connect it to the personal story of a remarkable Victorian woman and her enduring affection for her sister, adding a layer of poignant human interest to its architectural charm. The tower’s chimes punctuate the daily rhythm of the bustling harbour, contributing to the unique atmosphere of this popular Hebridean settlement.
For visitors, the Tobermory Clock Tower is easily accessible, located centrally on Main Street and visible from various points along the harbour. It serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the town, with numerous quaint shops, cafes, restaurants, and the Mull Museum just a short stroll away. From the Clock Tower, one can also embark on walks along the waterfront, perhaps exploring the path towards the distillery or continuing to the lighthouse, all while enjoying the scenic views of the bay and beyond. It embodies the essence of Tobermory’s charm and heritage.
