Ulva Ferry Community Transport (UFCT) provides a vital link for the remote community of Ulva Ferry on the Isle of Mull. Established in 2014 to combat geographic isolation, this community-led initiative was born from a local need for accessible transport after more than 15 years without public options. Operated by the Mull and Iona Community Trust in partnership with the Ulva School Community Association, the service ensures that both residents and visitors can navigate this beautiful corner of the island with ease.
The service utilizes two modern electric vehicles specifically adapted for wheelchair use, prioritizing inclusivity and environmental sustainability. These vehicles have become a lifeline for the area, assisting housebound residents with hospital appointments and respite care while also supporting social connectivity. Beyond individual transport, the bus frequently carries local students to school activities and transports residents to essential support groups, fostering a stronger and more integrated community.
By addressing the challenges of social and economic exclusion, UFCT helps sustain the local population and encourages young families to remain in the region. The project is part of a broader development plan that includes affordable housing and improved shore facilities, all designed to ensure the long-term resilience of Ulva Ferry. Whether you are a local heading to a community event or a visitor exploring the stunning landscape, the scheme offers a reliable and friendly way to travel across Mull.
